Growing up we had pancakes or waffles every single Sunday morning for breakfast and that often when with an unofficial pancake topping bar stocked with several kids of syrups: maple, Mrs. Butterworth’s and my favorite Smucker’s Blueberry syrup. We also had homemade applesauce and cherry fruit compote or light cherry pie filling. It was always served with butter and peanut butter. Peanut butter and syrup is a classic favorite!

If you need more than just pancakes for breakfast, then I suggest adding some protein side dishes like scrambled eggs made with cheddar cheese, bacon and/or sausage.

Fresh strawberries cut up and sugared and allowed to weep can create a lovely fresh strawberry “syrup” that will taste a lot like strawberry shortcake. Blueberries and cherries can be made into compote easily in a few minute on the stove. And fresh applesauce is always a hit at a pancake topping bar.
