Make Your Own Prehistoric Soap
Around our house, we are always making a fun bar of soap. Why, you ask? Because it’s one of the easiest crafts to make with kids, and it’s extremely useful! I mean who doesn’t use soap, right? In my eyes, it’s totally a win-win! For this DIY soap we used essential oils, which is an easy way to get some extra benefits while having fun.

So this week when my son and I were talking about what soap we were going to make next, he mentioned how much he really loved Jurassic World (by the way, it was great so if you haven’t seen it yet- do!) so of course, we had to make a handmade soap inspired by the movie and we came up with this Homemade Prehistoric Soap.

With just a few supplies like silicone molds, a bath toy, and about 30 minutes of your time, you can have your own kids soap that looks like it came right out of the Jurassic age! What a fun idea!

I love making natural soap and like to involve my kids in the process. Adding a toy dinosaur in the middle of the soap was the best thing we could’ve ever done! We know what it feels like to be a busy mom trying to find easy DIY projects our little ones can help make.
And now we found the perfect way to make hand washing and bath time fun activities. “Treat soap” has been just the ticket at our place. Because he is younger and has little fingers, he helped just a little with the soap making process under adult supervision, but older kids will really get into making fun soaps with little toys frozen inside. The best thing is that you can find all of these natural ingredients in a regular grocery store, the making process is a lot of fun, and it even works as the perfect gift during the holiday season. It’s literally the perfect soap!
This is one of the easiest homemade soap recipes we have used and we hope it inspires you to have so much fun with your kids for a long time. What a great way to have your kids washing their hands!

Supplies Needed to Make Your Own Soap:
- Clear Melt & Pour Soap Base
- Round Cupcake Silicone Mold
- Safari Ltd Dinosaur SkullsSafari Ltd Dinosaur Skulls
- Isopropyl Alcohol (in a spray bottle)
- Essential Oil or Fragrance Oil (we used lemon essential oil – but we also love lavender, Citrus Fresh, Peppermint, Orange, Neroli, Thieves, Purification, Stress Away, Cedarwood, Tangerine, Vetiver, Geranium or SleepyIze for bedtime)
- Red Food Coloring
- Yellow Food Coloring
- Craft Stick or Spoon (for stirring)
- Microwave Safe Cup or Bowl
- Knife
How to Make Your Own Prehistoric Soap:
- Using your knife, cut your soap base into small cubes and place into your microwave safe cup or bowl. Doing this will help melt the soap evenly.
- Place the soap into the microwave and cook on high for 30 seconds. Remove from microwave, stir and repeat until all the soap is melted.
- Squeeze 1 drop of red food coloring and 2 drops of yellow food coloring into the melted soap and stir well. This gives you that really cool amber color.

Materials

- Isopropyl Alcohol (in a spray bottle)
- Essential Oil or Fragrance Oil (we used lemon essential oil)
- Red Food Coloring
- Yellow Food Coloring
- Microwave Safe Cup or Bowl

- Craft Stick or Spoon (for stirring)
- Knife
Instructions
- Using your knife, cut your soap base into small cubes and place into your microwave-safe cup or bowl. Doing this will help melt the soap evenly.
- Place the soap into the microwave and cook on high for 30 seconds. Remove from microwave, stir and repeat until all the soap is melted.
- Squeeze 1 drop of red food coloring and 2 drops of yellow food coloring into the melted soap and stir well. This gives you that really cool amber color.
- Add your essential oil. You only need about 2-3 drops. Stir well.
- Pour your melted soap into each cavity of your silicone mold only filling it about 1/4 of the way full.
- Spray the dinosaur skull toys generously with your isopropyl alcohol. If you skip this step, you run the risk of the soap not adhering to the toy and causing a separation. So this step is IMPORTANT.
- Place a toy into each cavity where you poured the soap in step 5.
- Once your toy is positioned the way you want it, fill the cavities with the remaining melted soap base.
- Spray the tops of each cavity with the isopropyl alcohol. Doing this will remove any air bubbles at the surface.
- Allow the soaps to harden overnight for best results.
- Once they have hardened, removing the soaps is easy. Simply pull the mold away from the sides of the soaps and push from the backside of the mold. The soaps will pop right out.
Notes
You can use your soaps immediately. However, if you are not planning on using all the soaps immediately you will need to wrap them in plastic wrap or store in an airtight container until ready for use.
