I love making our home smell like Christmas. We have made several awesome holiday DIYs to help with just that like our oil diffusing ornament and these scented pinecones. Today we have a new fun way to scent your home with air dry clay Christmas ornaments!

These homemade ornaments are so easy and take about 2 minutes to make. Your kids will love helping you make these Christmas decorations – just follow the step by step tutorial!

Christmas Scented Homemade Clay Ornaments

These clay ornaments are not only easy to make, but they are also a great way to spend time with your family. It’s one of our favorite things to do during the holiday season.

Supplies Needed To Make These Scented Clay Ornaments

All you need is:

• Air-dry clay
• Ribbon
•  Essential oils
•  Cookie cutters (or a wine glass)

These are the main things you need to make this Christmas craft but there are also optional supplies to really make these ornaments your own, like a thin ribbon or colored tissue paper. The end result will be completely original and unique. We recommend getting gift tags too.

Optional:

• Acrylic paint
• Glitter
• Cookie stamps

The essential oil we have been using is Christmas Spirit  – the most perfect Christmas-y oil ever. Use this orange, cinnamon, and spruce blend in a diffuser and your home will really smell like Christmas! We love beautiful ornaments that also smell delicious.

How To Make Clay Ornaments

1. To make this clay ornament grab a bit of air-dry clay and smooth it out with a rolling pin.
2. Cut out a circle with a wine glass, Christmas cookie cutters, or use a circular cookie cutter shape to make a fun shape like a Christmas tree or a bell, etc.
3. Then, use a straw to poke a hole in the top of the ornament for the ribbon to string through.
4. Next you can design your own ornaments with anything you have around the house with a design. For instance, some great ideas are a plastic letter that kids play with to put their initials on top. Or use a little star play-doh shape maker like I did. Cookie stamps are also a good option and you can find many Christmas themed ones in any craft store. Then remove rough edges for a more finished look.
5. Flip it over and add 4 drops of essential oil to the back and then leave it to dry for a day or two at room temperature on a baking sheet or wax paper.
6. Add a piece of ribbon and hang your DIY ornaments on the tree!

Note:

If the scent starts drying you can add a couple more drops to the back to make them smell good again!

Make These Air Dry Clay Ornaments Spectacular

These DIY clay ornaments are lovely as is, but you can make them spectacular and unique. For best results, when you’re rolling the clay, add some glitter! Chunky glitter, fine glitter, there are so many different color combinations!

Some of my favorite Christmas colors are: red, green, silver, and gold. But loud colors are very popular too, so rainbows and neon colors like pink and green work well too on homemade Christmas ornaments.

Acrylic paint works best on air dry clay ornaments. It dries the best, keeps its boldness, and lasts the longest on it.

For extra uniqueness, you can make them in different sizes, add a gold leaf, etc. The goal is to enjoy making this fun project with the entire family – both younger kids and older kids included.
