Pearl Harbor Facts FOR KIDS

Pearl Harbor is a United States naval base located in Hawaii, and was one of the most strategically important bases for the US Pacific Fleet during World War II.
On December 7, 1941, a Sunday morning, the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor took place, marking a major turning point in World War II for the United States.
The attack was carried out by the Imperial Japanese Navy and involved a series of coordinated air strikes on the US Pacific Fleet’s battleships, cruisers, destroyers, and aircraft carriers stationed at Pearl Harbor.
The attack was a devastating blow to the United States, resulting in the loss of five battleships, three destroyers, damaged a heavy cruiser and numerous aircraft. The USS Arizona battleship, in particular, suffered a catastrophic explosion and remains submerged at the site as a memorial to the lives lost.
The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor propelled the United States into World War II. The day after the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill declared war on Japan.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was part of Japan’s larger strategy to establish dominance in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. It aimed to cripple the US Pacific Fleet and remove the threat it posed to Japanese expansion in the region.
Prior to the attack, tensions between Japan and the United States were escalating due to their competing interest in Chinese markets and Asian natural resources, and its alliance with Germany and Italy through the Tripartite Pact.
The attack on Pearl Harbor was carried out in two waves. The first wave targetted the battleships and other major warships, while the second wave primarily targeted the aircraft carriers.
While the focus of the attack was on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese government simultaneously launched attacks on other targets, such as the Philippines, Singapore, British Malaya, Wake Island, Guam, and the British colony of Hong Kong.
In the aftermath of the attack, efforts were made to repair and salvage the damaged American warships. Some of the sunken battleships were raised and returned to service, while others were ultimately deemed irreparable.
